Introduction: DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control are used to thicken the output from an ileostomy within the stoma bag itself. They are also used to reduce odour and ballooning within the ileostomy bag. This poster will examine the question: Does the use of DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control alter the volume measurements of the output from an ileostomy.
Background: Liquid bile or watery output are complications that can be experienced following creation of an ileostomy. Occasionally this affects the ability to obtain a leak-free seal with a stoma bag. As a result faecal matter may contaminate a surgical site such as a midline incision.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). SSIs account for around 20% of all HAIs. (Barnes 2018).
The DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control changes the consistency of the output from watery liquid to a thicker gel. The idea was to trial this agent to discover if the volume of the fluid changed. It was important to determine whether the volume changed, as clinical decisions are based on the patient’s fluid balance status.
If it was found that the DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control did not alter the volume of the output, the product could be used to potentially decrease the risk of stoma bag leakage onto surgical sites thus decreasing the risk of developing this type of HAI.
Conclusion: The DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control did not alter the volume of the output. The DiamondsTM Gelling Sachets with ActiveOneTM Odour Control affected the consistency and appearance of the output.
