The integrity of the peristomal skin is vital not only for patient comfort, body image, self esteem etc, but for the maintenance of a leak proof appliance.  Nurses and Ostomates alike use a plethora of products on the peristomal skin for a variety of reasons, some practices validated and some learned, however, I would ask the question – Do Stomal Therapy Nurses stop and really think about the impacts of what we put on the peristomal skin  and how it interacts with the properties of a Hydrocolloid? I would also ask the question – Do we really know the answer to this?

This paper will review some of the products currently used on peristomal skin from data collected from both a survey of Stomal Therapy Nurses and Ostomates.

The analysis of the impacts of these products in relation to skin issues and hydrocolloid effectiveness will be discussed.
